Abstract

The oil extraction from sunflower seeds, the local variety, was studied using four different organic solvents: ethyl ether, ethyl alcohol, hexane, and petroleum jelly, by the two methods of continuous extraction and meal extraction. The effect of temperature and the amount of solvent used on the extraction process was demonstrated, and the results showed that The weight percentage of the extracted oil was according to the following sequence:
Ethyl ether 34.6%, hexane 34.1%, pure petroleum 30.65%, ethyl alcohol 28%, and the temperature and the amount of solvent are directly proportional to the amount of extracted oil.
The results of the continuous extraction by the Soxhlet method also confirmed that ethyl ether and hexane are the best solvents in this field, and that the latter has lower costs and is more encouraging, especially because it is necessary to reach in this work an easy way to prepare it from local gasoline with another solvent, pure petroleum and Very close specs. of the commercial variety, and the weight percentage of the oil extracted from them was, respectively, 32% and 29%.
And these results are much better than the results of the pressing method currently used in the local markets, which is only 17% by weight.
